چکیده

[1] Dual-frequency cloud and precipitation radar systems are being actively developed and installed on different platforms. The use of two radar frequencies (with at least one frequency outside the Rayleigh type of scattering for hydrometeors of interest) allows independent estimates of hydrometeor effective size. With these estimates, radarbased retrievals of such important parameters as cloud mass content or precipitation rate can be potentially performed with better accuracy compared to singlefrequency radar measurements. This study presents quantitative assessments of the effects of nonsphericity of ice cloud particles which influence the dual-frequency ratio used for characteristic size estimates. Use of the sea surface as reference for GPM dual-frequency radar algorithms

In airborne and spaceborne radar remote sensing of clouds and precipitation, measurements of the sea surface normalized radar cross section σ are widely used to constrain and condition algorithms for the retrieval of atmospheric parameters. Classification of hydrometeors using microwave brightness temperature data from AMSU-B over Iran

The Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit-B (AMSU-B) installed on the NOAA-15, 16, and 17 satellites, is the new generation of a series of microwave imagers/sounders that can sense atmospheric moisture and other hydrometeors through clouds. This paper demonstrates the potential of multi-frequency AMSU-B data for classifying different types of hydrometeors. Ten types of these hydrometers have been co...

Characterizing the Radar Backscatter-Cross-Section Sensitivities of Ice-Phase Hydrometeor Size Distributions via a Simple Scaling of the Clausius–Mossotti Factor

One of the challenges that limit the amount of information that can be inferred from radarmeasurements of ice and mixed-phase precipitating clouds is the variability in ice mass within hydrometeors. The variable amount of ice mass within particles of a given size drives further variability in single-scattering properties that results in uncertainties of forward-modeled remote sensing quantities...

Empirical conversion of the vertical profile of reflectivity from Kuband to Sband frequency

[1] This paper presents an empirical method for converting reflectivity from Ku-band (13.8GHz) to S-band (2.8GHz) for several hydrometeor species, which facilitates the incorporation of Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Precipitation Radar (PR) measurements into quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) products from the U.S. Next-Generation Radar (NEXRAD). The development of empiric...

Observations of Ice Crystal Habits with a Scanning Polarimetric W-Band Radar at Slant Linear Depolarization Ratio Mode

Scanning polarimetric W-band radar data were evaluated for the purpose of identifying predominant ice hydrometeor habits. Radar and accompanying cloud microphysical measurements were conducted during the Storm Peak Laboratory Cloud Property Validation Experiment held in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, during the winter season of 2010/11. The observed ice hydrometeor habits ranged from pristine and...
